And the answer is...

A cat's muzzle whiskers extend past the width of the body and the 
eyebrow whiskers extend past the top of the head so that a cat can judge 
whether or not he'll fit into an opening.

Bette, yes, it does sound like one of the things someone made up to 
explain to kids why cats have whiskers, doesn't it? <g>

Kudos to Julie, Anna, Maureen, and Bette!  And for those of you who knew 
the answer but didn't send it in, pat yourself on the back too!

Anna, although it's a good theory, cats' whiskers supposedly don't grow 
longer if they are overweight.  (Supposedly, because there's no proof 
that they do.)

Since a cat's whiskers are used for more than keeping them from getting
